Signs Your Roof Needs Clearing

Calgary's Chinooks melt roof snow by day and refreeze it at night, which is exactly how ice dams form.

Ice dams at the eaves

A ridge of ice along the edge of the roof traps melt water behind it, which can back up under the shingles.

Big icicles

Heavy icicles along the eavestrough usually mean an ice dam is forming above them.

Water stains inside

Brown spots on ceilings or exterior walls after a melt are a sign water is getting in.

Deep drifts on low slopes

Flat and low-slope roofs, and roofs beside taller walls, collect drifts that add a lot of weight.

Why Roofers Do This Job

Most roof damage in winter isn't caused by the snow. It's caused by the way it's removed. Metal shovels scrape granules off shingles, chipping at ice cracks them, and a ladder leaned on an eavestrough bends it.

Roofers work safely on icy slopes, leave a protective layer of snow on the shingles, and clear the eaves and valleys where ice dams start. If something on the roof does need a repair, the same company can look at it.

When should roof snow be removed in Calgary?

When ice dams or big icicles form at the eaves, when water stains appear inside after a melt, or when deep drifts build up on flat and low-slope roofs.

Should I shovel my own roof?

We don't recommend it. Icy roofs are dangerous to stand on, and metal shovels and ice chipping crack shingles and bend eavestroughs.

Who does the work?

Roofers from our sister company, Calgary Roofing Pro, who know how shingles, flashing and eavestroughs are put together.

Do you remove all the snow down to the shingles?

No. A thin layer is left on the roof so tools never scrape the shingles, while the weight and the ice dam are dealt with.
